I’ve been taking one-to-one lessons with Keishū-sensei for a while now, focused on speaking and listening, and it’s been excellent. Lessons are conducted entirely in Japanese, and he speaks at natural, everyday pace rather than slowing down for the learner — which forces real listening comprehension rather than a comfortable simulation of it. Grammar coverage goes from intermediate through advanced, up to JLPT N2 level, even though I have no intention of sitting the exam; I learn purely out of interest, mainly to maintain conversational Japanese useful for travel. Beyond textbook grammar, he teaches colloquial, everyday speech and cultural context, which matters more for actual conversation than exam-style Japanese does.
